1 killed, 1 injured in crash on I-71 in north Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio — One person was killed and one person was injured in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 71 in north Columbus Tuesday evening.

The crash happened just before 8:10 p.m., on I-71 north, just south of Polaris Parkway.

A vehicle going northbound on I-71 between I-270 and Polaris Parkway struck another vehicle that was stopped in the middle of the freeway.

A passenger in the vehicle was stopped was taken to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in life-threatening condition where he later died at 8:47 p.m. 

The identity of the passenger has not been identified until his family is notified.

Columbus police said one person was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

Police had blocked I-71 north at I-270 on the north side of the city because of the crash. The road reopened shortly after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The crash is under investigation.

School districts across central Ohio are changing their plans to have kids in the classrooms as COVID-19 cases are surging in the state.

Several districts are also seeing a rise in cases among staff, or staff that needs to quarantine because of having contact with someone who may have tested positive for the virus.
